We’ve already given you a snippet about our judging panel, but we wanted you to get to know them a bit better, because of course you want to know who will be looking at your work and deciding whether it’s good enough to be in the next Annual. Ok, we’re also slightly curious and nosy so we went ahead and asked them to answer a few questions for us…

Our first judge is the lovely and talented Katie Chappell.

1 — What is your Proudest Moment in your Career?

My proudest illustration career moment so far was being able to go full-time in illustration — that bit where my illustration work was busy enough that I was able to leave my part-time lecturing job, and stop being a nanny. I loved lecturing and nannying but that moment when my illustration career got too busy for me to juggle all three things I was like, “OK, maybe this full-time illustration idea can actually be A Thing now.” It was exciting!

Live illustration & graphic recording take up most of my time and I’m also a co-founder of The Good Ship Illustration with my excellent friends Helen Stephens and Tania Willis. We share the illustration career knowledge we wish we’d known when we were starting out! We have online courses, a podcast and free online workshops. I’m really proud of The Good Ship Illustration.

2 — What’s a particularly Favourite Project you’ve worked on?

Ooft, it’s hard to choose one. I recently painted windows for a collaboration between Pret a Manger and the Too Good to Go app in London. The window was all about reducing food waste. Painting on a window always feels a bit more exciting than drawing at an online meeting from my studio. Being able to take interesting photos and videos makes it more fun, haha.

3 — Who is your current Favourite Illustrator and what do you like about their work?

At the moment I really love Faye Moorhouse’s work. It’s sploshy and quick and her sense of humour is brilliant.

4 — What is your secret to making good work?

If you enjoy what you’re doing it shows!

We’d like to thank Katie for taking time from her busy schedule to answer our interview questions! Watch this space for more interviews in the coming days.
